Frequently Asked Questions
What is Debt Payoff Planner, and how does it help me?
Debt Payoff Planner is an advanced financial optimization tool designed to help you organize, manage, and systematically eliminate your personal debts. Instead of making random payments across different credit cards, loans, or mortgages, the app creates a mathematically optimized payoff plan tailored to your financial situation.
By entering your current debts, interest rates, and available monthly budget, the app generates a step-by-step roadmap showing which debt to pay first, how much interest you can save, and your estimated debt-free date.
What is the difference between the Debt Snowball and Debt Avalanche strategies?
The app supports two proven debt payoff strategies, allowing you to choose the approach that best matches your goals and motivation style.
Debt Snowball (Behavioral Focus)
This strategy prioritizes debts from the smallest balance to the largest balance, regardless of interest rates. Paying off smaller debts first provides quick wins and helps build momentum throughout your debt repayment journey.
Debt Avalanche (Mathematical Focus)
This strategy prioritizes debts from the highest interest rate to the lowest interest rate. It minimizes the total interest paid over time and is generally the most cost-effective repayment method.
Custom Priority
You can also manually arrange your debts in any order based on your personal preferences, such as paying off a family loan or a specific account first.
You can switch between strategies at any time in the Strategy section to compare payoff timelines and interest savings.
How does the app calculate my projected Debt-Free Date?
The app uses a month-by-month financial simulation to estimate when all of your debts will be fully paid off.
Each month, the system:
Calculates interest accrued on each active debt based on its annual percentage rate (APR).
Applies the required minimum payment to every active account.
Uses any extra available funds and freed-up payments from paid-off debts to reduce the balance of your highest-priority debt.
Continues the process until all debt balances reach zero.
The app also detects situations where minimum payments are not enough to cover interest charges and provides warnings to help prevent balances from growing over time.
What are Rollover Payments, and how do they speed up my payoff?
Rollover Payments are one of the most powerful features of debt repayment planning.
When a debt is completely paid off, its monthly minimum payment becomes available. Instead of stopping that payment, the app automatically redirects the same amount to your next priority debt.
As more debts are eliminated, the amount available for repayment continues to grow, allowing you to pay off remaining balances much faster and significantly reduce your overall payoff time.
How can I add extra monthly payments or one-time windfalls to my plan?
You can increase the speed of your debt payoff by adding extra funds through the Strategy section.
Recurring Extra
Payments Add a fixed amount of extra money each month, such as $150, in addition to your required minimum payments.
Targeted Allocation
Extra funds are typically applied to your highest-priority debt based on your selected payoff strategy. You can also choose a specific debt as a priority target and direct all additional funds toward that account until it is paid off.
